Daredeviltry and stupidity have always enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with one another. It seems as though the blade of bravery is always edged with the razor point of a complete lack of common sense. History has recorded numerous examples of this beautiful coupling, but no contemporary example personifies the ever balancing alliance more than the Jackass series. Nothing can rival the rather intense harmony of bone breaking stupidity and mind blowing audacity like that group of mentally deranged man-children. And without the invention of the camcorder, the show would never have been conceived.

Their show was marked by completing stunts that bordered on insane without the sort of professional training any normal person would want. It’s inception was a sorted tale of various failed actors and stuntmen in a last dash effort to get something out lives wasted hurting themselves in various ways. Directors Jeff Tremaine and Dave England stitched together the cast from a myriad of misfits that sent in videos of themselves participating in stunts that could conservatively be called “nuts”. Every Jackass hopeful would submit home videos, chronicling their quests for what appears to be complete mutilation and death, most of which being recorded on digital camcorders. In fact, that one piece of technology is responsible for the entire Jackass series.

Eventually, Jackass evolved into a cultural phenomenon, with a huge endorsement from frat boys and drunk teenagers, but it all began humbly with home videos. The Jackass generation, those of us who grew through adolescence watching those charismatic scamps maim themselves for fun and fame, have no greater incentive to own camcorders. No matter how serious a warning is given before the beginning of the show, every impressionable youth watching the show immediately went out and tried to imitate. And in order to authentically replicate the aesthetic of the show, one needed one’s own Digital camcorder to record the intense amounts of stupidity about to be perpetrated.
One single element is often the catalyst to cultural anomalies. The iPod can claim responsibility for those of us that still use iTunes, despite the fact that it is an awful media player.

The cell phone claims responsibility for the truncation of the English language into a barely decipherable series of short anagrams. And the camcorder can claim responsibility for the generation of young men and women that have thrown themselves off roofs, set their limbs on fire, and generally behaved in ways that would seem shamefully to a modest ape.
We can only hope that with the continued evolution of technology, like the camcorder that can be attached to a stunt helmet, that we will have continued evolution of brainless stunts, performed by misguided and witless youths. We can only hope.
